How to cut audio without damaging it

Trimming audio looks trivial and mostly is, but two things separate a clean edit from an amateur one. The first is where you cut. The second is what happens at the boundary.

Where you cut matters musically: a cut placed a fraction before a downbeat feels tight, while one placed a fraction after it feels like a mistake, even when the difference is only twenty milliseconds. Use the waveform to find the transient — the sharp vertical spike that marks a kick or snare — and place your boundary just before it rather than on top of it.

What happens at the boundary is a technical problem. Audio is a continuous waveform, and at any given moment its value is almost never zero. Cut there and the file jumps instantly from that value to silence, a discontinuity that spreads energy across the entire frequency spectrum and arrives at your ear as a click. A short fade — even ten milliseconds, far too short to perceive as a fade — walks the signal down to zero and the click disappears.

A workflow that avoids rework

Set the region first, listen to it, then add fades. Fades applied before you have settled the boundaries just have to be redone. If you are cutting a loop for production, check that the region length divides sensibly into bars: at 120 BPM a bar is exactly two seconds, so a four-bar loop is eight seconds.

If you are removing a section rather than keeping one, listen carefully to the join. Two pieces of music spliced together only sound seamless when the energy either side is similar and the phrasing lines up. Adding a short fade on both sides of the join usually smooths over the seam.

  • Cut just before a transient, never on top of one
  • 10–30 ms of fade is enough to kill clicks and stays inaudible
  • Use 1–3 second fades for a musical ending rather than an edit
  • Check loop lengths against the tempo: 60 / BPM × 4 = one bar in seconds

Keeping the quality you started with

Every time lossy audio is decoded and re-encoded it loses a little more detail, and the loss is cumulative. Editing an MP3 and saving it as an MP3 puts your audio through a second full encode, which is why a heavily edited file can end up noticeably duller than the original.

The way around it is to stay lossless until the last step. Cut here, export WAV, do any other processing you need on the WAV, and encode to MP3 or AAC exactly once when the file is finished. That single encode is where the quality decision belongs.
